DURAN DURAN - SOME OF THEIR BEST VIDEOS

ANOTHER BAND THAT WAS CRUSHING IT IN THE 80S WAS DURAN DURAN, WETHER YOU LIKED THEM OR HATED THEM, YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THEY MADE SOME CRAZY VIDEOS. SOME OF THEIR VIDEOS WERE LIKE MINI MOVIES, NEW TECHNIQUES BEING USED IN EVERY ONE. ESPECIALLY "PLANET EARTH" THIS WAS ONE OF THEIR FIRST ONES AND I CAN REMEMBER JUST TRIPPING OUT, CAUSE IT WAS LIKE A SCI FI MOVIE. THE VIDEO FOR "GIRLS ON FILM" I THINK WAS EVEN BANNED FROM MTV, AND SO WAS THE CHAUFFEUR. IT WAS ALL ABOUT NEWNESS, CAN YOU IMAGINE MAKING SOMETHING TODAY THAT WAS TOTALLY NEW, I DON'T KNOW IF PEOPLE WOULD EVEN LIKE IT, BUT I HOPE THEY WOULD, I AM STILL HOPEFUL THAT CREATIVITY IS COMING BACK INTO STYLE. BUT FOR NOW HERES A FEW VIDEOS TO GET LOST IN.

SIMPLE MINDS - UP ON THE CATWALK

THE 80S WAS THE PEAK OF MTV, THERE WERE A LOT F MUSIC VIDEOS THAT WERE ARTISTICALLY AMAZING, THIS IS ONE OF THEM. BACK IN THIS TIME IT WAS IMPORTANT TO CREATE THINGS THAT WERE NEW, CREATE A LOOK OR A SOUND THAT YOU HAD NEVER HEARD BEFORE. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT COME BACK INTO STYLE, THE ALTERNATIVE TO MASS PRODUCTION.

JACK DENNY - WORLD JUNGLE

GROWING UP IN LAGUNA BEACH IN THE 80S, EVERYONE KNEW JACK DENNY, HE WAS THE MAN, BEST SURFER IN TOWN AND HE WAS A GREAT DESIGNER, REALLY TALENTED. JACK WAS ALWAYS ON THE FOREFRONT, SO, YOU WERE ALWAYS LOOKING TO SEE WHAT HE WAS DOING. HE PASSED AWAY IN 1998, AND THE SURFING WORLD LOST AN ICON AND HE WAS OUTSPOKEN ON THINGS HE BELIEVED IN, I THINK IF HE WERE STILL HERE, THE INDUSTRY WOULD BE DIFFERENT, MAYBE MORE CREATIVE AND LESS BIG BIZ. HERE IS AN OLD ARTICLE I FOUND THAT HE DID, ITS PRETTY COOL TO HEAR WHAT DESIGNING FOR A SMALL SURF BRAND WAS LIKE BACK THEN, BEFORE THE INTERNET AND BACK THEN THERE WERE REALLY ONLY A FEW SURF BRANDS.

POTTZ...

THERE IS SO MUCH I COULD SAY ABOUT MARTIN POTTER, BUT IT WOULD ONLY BE JUST A DROP IN THE BUCKET OF ALL THE THINGS THAT POTTZ DID FOR SURFING AND HONESTLY THE YOUTH THAT WANTED TO RIDE SURFBOARDS. THE FIRST WORD THAT COMES TO MIND IS RADICAL WITH ABOUT 20 EXCLAMATION POINTS, HIS LIFE WAS RADICAL, TURNED PRO AT LIKE 13 OR SOMETHING CRAZY, FIRST ONE TO GET TOWED INTO A WAVE AT THIRD REEF PIPE, THE FIRST GUY DOING PROPER AERIALS AND BIG ONES, THE FIRST RADICAL SURFER TO WIN A WORLD TITLE. POTTZ WON THE WORLD TITLE IN 89, AND THAT YEAR HE WON ALMOST EVERYTHING, HE WAS AN ANIMAL AND FOR THE FIRST TIME THE JUDGING DECIDED THEY WOULD SCORE HIM ACCORDINGLY, KIDS COMPLAIN NOW THAT THE JUDGING SUCKS, BUT BACK THEN A BUNCH OF SMALL TURNS WOULD BEAT A BIG TURN OR AN AERIAL, THE JUDGES DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO DO WHEN HE SURFED, IT WAS ALL NEW. SECONDLY POTTZ WAS RADICAL IN HIS LIFE, HE RAN AT 100 MPH AT EVERYTHING, HE CARRIED AN ATTITUDE THAT STOOD OUT, HE WORE BRIGHT COLORED CLOTHES HAD LONG ROCK AND ROLL HAIR, HE HAD AN EARING, HA, WHICH BACK THEN WAS PRETTY CRAZY, AND HE RODE FOR GOTCHA WHICH WAS THE MOST BADASS BRAND OF THAT TIME. BASICALLY POTTZ CHANGED MORE THAN THE WAY WE SURF BUT THE WAY WE SEE SURFINGS POSSIBILITIES , I DONT THINK PEOPLE GIVE ENOUGH CREDIT FOR THIS, WITHOUT HIM IN HISTORY, SURFERS MAY ALL BE POLITE ATHLETES WHO ADHERE TO EVERY RULE AND WOULD BE RIDING WHITE BOARDS, WHICH WOULD SUCK, CAUSE FLAMES LOOK GOOD ON A SURFBOARD AND I LIKE THAT KIDS THESE DAYS ARE ABLE TO EXPRES THEMSELVES THROUGH THEIR SURFING. THANX POTTZ, IT HAS BEEN VERY ENTERTAINING WATCHING ALL THESE YEARS.
